Do NOT tell me that she "got lucky" with Monster. No, getting lucky is doing a Lifetime football drama and working the awards circuit till Hollywood throws you a statue. Charlize won for Monster because she gave the best performance of the year, in a film that had next to no Oscar hopes when it was in production. She single handedly put it in contention.
She got a second nom for North Country only 2 years later, deserved a nom and WIN for Young Adult in 2011, and her work in Mad Max: Fury Road is not "generic action star" in any way, shape, or form. Is The Godfather generic crime drama? Is Titanic generic romance? Fury Road is not the epitome of an action film - the perfect specimen. And it works because her performance is smoldering, angry, and layered.
MISS ME with that drag. Does she take some cheap roles for coin? Of course she does. Million Ways to Die in the West (tho lowkey it was cute) and those trash Huntsman movies. But the fact remains that she is almost always the best part of every movie she does. Why is it that actors/actresses are obligated to only make ~art~ films once they've won an Oscar? I swear, y'all would turn on Cate Blanchett the second she did a Marvel movie.
Charlize Theron gave the best performance that won an Oscar this century, and she remains better than almost every other working actress today. Skill wise, she's on par with Marion, Cate, Viola, etc.

Cate is doing a Marvel movie.
I'm highkey unfamiliar with Charlize's filmography. I actually think Mad Max might be the only one I've seen.
EDIT: and Hancock and (most of) Cider House.

Wow, Cate must be a sell out.
See Monster, North Country, and Young Adult. She's good in The Road, too, but it's a minor role. Young Adult is probably the best overall film that she's a part of.
---
Also I retract the actresses in their 30s bit, because Charlize is 41. AGELESS.

Charlize was also good in Prometheus. Doing the blockbusters keeps her relevant and able to do her art projects. It's what smart A-list actors do.
Cate got lucky with LOTR because that was the only blockbuster franchise that was also a hugely acclaimed Oscar player in the last couple of decades, but then she also did the horrible Indiana Jones 4 film, a voice in How to Train Your Dragon 2, Cinderella, and the flop Robin Hood remake with Russell Crowe.

Cinderella and HTTYD2 were both acclaimed Oscar nominated box office hits. They don't belong in a list of panned flops.

She was the probable runner-up her first bid, and now winner her second. Both (probably) for BP winners. Ah, the power.

Did anyone like Hairspray? I don't usually watch musicals, but I liked La La Land and this scene looks cool.
Not sure if I should bother.

Who would have thought that a single critics win is all Stone needed to claim her throne again as the frontrunner? What will be Nialler and all other Portmaniacs excuse now that their only complain "Stone hasn't won a single critics award" is now over?

Let them have that one. Lord knows they needed a win. Now they can get all cocky again to be let down once again.

Volpi Cup winner Stone doesn't need critics' wins to win the Oscar. She just needed one to put Portmaniacs in their places
Let's be real, if Stone didn't win the UFC you would also be cocky and say things like, "Oops, someone is missing again , etc." so let's not!

Neither a LLL or Moonlight win would be a "surprise." If anything it's MBTS that's a dark horse for BP.
