As she should. One of the best selling albums of the year, a blockbuster tour, and controversial, culturally relevant singles. In addition, she's had several groundbreaking performances, and Lemonade is regarded as a critical masterpiece. She was even nominated for Emmy for her innovative film, which incorporated the music brilliantly. At the same time, she also garnered wins and nominations at several other prestigious award ceremonies. If Beyoncé doesn't win AOTY, I have no other option but to accuse the Academy of blatant racism.

But she has won like 20 times.

Why are people always saying this as if 18 of these awards weren't in the urban categories ?

The last person to posthumously win AOTY was Ray Charles in 2005. And before that night, the Grammys never recognized his work.
Now, I dont think Bowie is winning this yet. Im not sure he's getting even nominated tbh. Blackstar is a really dark album and even though they respect it, I don't necessarily think they like it.
If Bowie is nominated with Radiohead, they're definitely splitting votes. However, I think many voters will use the "he died so this is his last chance, beyonce and radiohead are still active" line of thinking while voting.

In many of the smaller categories, yes. But we will see if the Grammy's will consider her, the first black woman in decades, to win the coveted AOTY Award. She should've won back in 2014, but she should without a doubt, win this time.

Yikes At least she received a nomination? And to be honest, 25 was bigger than Lemonade so that may be a factor as to why they would give it to Adele.

Against Bowie and Radiohead? I would think twice before confidently saying this.

I love how you literally skipped over everything I just wrote, and diluted it to "the best album of the year."
Criteria per Grammys website:
Quote:
The Grammy Award for Album of the Year is presented by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States to "honor artistic achievement, technical proficiency and overall excellence in the recording industry, without regard to album sales or chart position."
|
It's more than what was "the best album," and Lemonade fits it perfectly. The commercial success is just a bonus.

Lets not pull the racism card. It's over played. The Grammys have continuously snubbed many great artists, Bowie being one of them as mentioned. Screaming "racism!" just creates more disdain and is a cheap cop out.

Funny you are using the sales card to justify Adele's win. But when Beck won in 2015, sales were irrelevant.

Okay? Bowie can be honored in other ways, and Radiohead only has 3 Grammy's in their entire career. This is Beyoncé's moment, which she should've had 2 years ago.

Radiohead has all the ingredients for an AOTY win. Much-beloved veteran act making a successful comeback with an acclaimed album. They will pull a Beck, a Daft Punk, a U2.
Giving David AOTY now would be such a spit on his grave, but I can see them doing it considering how vile the grammys are.
|
If Radiohead had all the ingredients of AOTY then Rolling Stone would have given them top album and not Lemonade, period.
You can't get away with claiming "stan opinions" when Lemonade has topped multiple year end lists (so far more than both Bowie and Radiohead).

Y'all are so greedy. You do realise there are legends like Nas, Diana Ross, Snoop Dogg, Oasis, Morrisey, Talking Heads and many others who haven't won one at all? And here you are clamoring for your fave to drown in their biggest awards while she's already one of their most-awarded entertainers ever.

The last black woman to win AOTY was Lauryn Hill back in the 90s right?

No one is pulling a race card here. If big name, "main" pop girls such as Adele and Taylor can win for their groundbreaking albums, then so can Bey. I'm sorry, I'm just calling it for what it is. There hasn't been a black woman to win since Lauryn Hill. This is overdue.

No need to be so defensive. And not sure why you think Rolling Stone, or any other year-end list for that matter, suddenly is a precursor for the AOTY grammy. They frequently go a different route entirely.

That doesn't have anything to do with what I said. Why are some of you always saying that Beyoncé already has 20 grammys whenever someone accuses the committee of racism ? I personnally don't think that they're racist per se, more that they have some ridiculous bias against urban music and overall don't know anything about that genre. But saying that Beyoncé (or others like Kanye) have 20+ grammys doesn't invalidate the racism claims since they hardly ever win against white artists
