"longtime Democrats" are the Democrats who are old enough to remember Ronald Reagan/George Bush Sr walloping the Dems with openly racist/classist platforms that wouldn't help anybody but the rich white elite
these people only saw the Democratic party win elections by running with an centrist, anti-Progressive, lite-Republican message (Carter/Clinton). for this reason, these people will never support Bernie or anybody like him because his policies are seen by them as too Progressive for broad appeal to the electorate
these were the same Democrats who criticized Obama for being "too Socialist" in 2008 and overwhelmingly supported Hillary over Obama because she was more "electable." the exact same criticisms they have of Bernie are the criticisms they threw at Obama. now that we've seen how an Obama election turned out and how a Hillary election turned out it's safe to say that these "longtime Democrats" are out of touch with today's electorate and the current Democratic coalition.
