It would! I don't like the EC and I think its outdated.
But I'm not necessarily sure the direct popular vote is the best way to go in a constitutional Republic. Over here in the UK, Scotland is wayyyyyy over-represented when you look at their number of MPs v population, probably too much. But, I'm not again that - they're a different country with different ideals and different things are important to them.
If you do it strictly on popular vote, then all of a sudden candidates will only bother to visit the big cities and tailor their message to the cities. I think the best advantage of the EC is that it makes candidates reach out to different communities.
I'm not sure of any countries that elect entirely on popular vote for this reason. You're meant to be Prime Minister/President of the
whole country. Even in the UK, where the popular vote winner normally always becomes Prime Minister, it still isn't direct and winning with less votes is still possible. And in a lot of proportional systems in Europe, its possible that the popular vote winner doesn't get in power by the second and third parties forming a Coalition with each other.
I don't like the EC, but a direct popular vote system has a lot of flaws.
