I like Roanoke, it's definitely the scariest seasom and I think that was the point. The last three seasons weren't scary at all and this was putting the horror back on American Horror Story.
However, the overcompensation of horror leads to an issue with character development. That's something every season had at least one great example of - we got flashbacks, we got an origin, story, we got growth. But now we dont get that kind of development. The characters are just thrown in front of us and die before we can get attached tbem. Lee was obviously the main focus the whole time and I like that, but Asylum proved that you can have both good development, good plot, and still be scary.
It's a great season, but it's such a departure in terms of.format that it doesn't really feel like American Horror Story. I think maybe a reboot was necessary though, and it has definite definitely won the GP back so I'm glad for that. I just hope the next season is a little more AHS-like.
I agree that there was a lack of character development this season but that was kind of a conscious choice they made given the format, no? There's no way to have strong character development with the way they've done this season. I think it worked, because this season has really been fantastic.
Thankfully there are still some loose ends and some resolution that needs to happen with this finale, which will hopefully make it good. That's one thing that made Hotel's finale weak, was that the episode before it was basically more of a finale...the actual finale episode felt more like an epilogue.
