Even before Rockstar was performed on Idol, people thought it would flop. Idol did help Rockstar. It was hanging around the 100's on iTunes for a few days after the performance. Hard didn't exactly have intense promotion. It was only performed on TV once or twice.

It was performed on the AMA, Ellen, Saturday Night Live, 106 & Park, GMM and more that I can't remember.
Actually, the closest R101 ever had to #100 was after Gossip Girl. After American Idol it peaked at #145.

I think people are afraid of the "dark" sound. Ever since "Russian Roulette", people assume anything that anything that is even remotely dark from her will flop even though the problem was never the darkness so much as it was that particular song.
I don't know if R101 will be a huge hit but I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

Hard was dark-ish but it was still a hit. I don't think people should write off Rockstar yet, it doesnt have an adds date, it barely had any promotion, and the video isn't out.

When it leaked, it started flying up the urban and rhythmic charts but at the time pop were still spinning "Mullet" like crazy. So by the time it reached Top 10 on Pop, it had already peaked on the other 2 formats and that ruined its longevity.

Actually, I was one of the only people who thought Rude Boy is the perfect single choice and should have been released as the first single, even though it defeats the idea of Rated R.
I'm better than the "label executive" because I'm a costumer and I know what the mainstream and the general public wants. I'm actually a Media student and I have my own opinion which I'm allowed to express. Freedom of Speech.
If Rockstar 101 will achieve success, and I hope it does, then I'll be happy. It doesn't mean I still think it's a good single choice.

If we were to go by the CUSTOMERS Rude Boy would have never been a single and Fire Bomb should've been released first. Alicia Keys performed "Unthinkable" and its #125 on itunes right now. Didn't move at all. With airplay. American Idol has never created hits, i wish people would just stop acting like she performed Rockstar, it has an adds date on radio, and a video and its not in the top 100 on itunes.

Only Rihanna fans want Fire Bomb as singles. Rude Boy was the only track from RaR that appealed to the mainstream public, even before it was officially released.
Wanna know why? Because nobody wants to be sad. Nobody wants dark music. Nobody wants ballads. All the people want to have fun, get drunk and have sex. They want to ease their minds off. That's why songs like TiK ToK and I Gotta Feeling got extremely huge, because they are the shape of today's successful music.
