Ok so I looked up IFPI reports. Couldn't find one for 1999, but the 2000 had a 438.3 millions singles sold WW figure, stating that the number decreased 14.3%, which would put at 501 millions singles sold for 1999. I couldn't find overall singles figure in most recent IFPI reports, the most recent one having an overall figure for singles sold WW is the 2008 which has a 1.4 billion figure. That's a 280% increase.

BOMT, the single, would've sold 24.7M in 2008

Stop with the sale inflation adjustment. It is disgusting and very unnessary. Taylor sold a lot of album since 2006 but it doesnt mean that she could have sold more in late 90s. There is no guarantee for that. Who knows? She would have flopped. Same with Britney. There was no guarantee that her earlier singles would and could have sold more in late 00s.

Even though she got bigger (in those 2 or 3 countries she's famous) she can't match Britney, not even in those local western countries.

lol. Taylor is bigger than Britney in Asia. It wasn't just 2-3 countries. Even Fearless (a country album) went diamond in Philippines and certified multiplatinum in most countries here. Let alone Red and 1989

good point, but Lemonade itself is a very successful era (second biggest of this year) so besides IASF, it's hardly a stretch is it?

Besides this is an isolated case. For most of the time, the album rankings of each year paints a very accurate picture of how huge an era is. 1989 was also competing against huge albums like X and In The Lonely Hour so it's not like it's a case of no competition either
