Ya'll give Lana too much credit. People were making ambient music long before, it just wasn't as mainstream cause no one was willing to pay for it (who wants to buy elevator music?), but since streaming took over, it's become more integrated.
I'm not here for your entertainment
You don't really want to mess with me tonight
Just stop and take a second
I was fine before you walked into my life
Cause you know it's over
Before it began
Keep your drink just give me the money
It's just you and your hand tonight
She's the only indie girl that really owns her persona. People really think she's this narcissistic rich sadistic bitch who chases older men, and maybe she is, nobody knows. It's the mystique that draws people to her. Nobody is here for that weak Marina "~ironic~" nonsense.
You opinions are always on point especially that last part

Not gonna lie, Lana's image plays a role in her musical appeal to me.
I'd be more inclined to agree if the sound of the people who "copied" her's music also took on a cinematic tone.
Otherwise, it's misrepresentative to say that people copied her purely on the basis of incorporating trip hop and "sad" lyrics(?). Lol
Except the cinematic, lush strings is just one part of her sound. The trip hop beats with chopped up vocal samples started popping up absolutely everywhere after Lana did it. Lyrics alone can also be an inspiration, and when coupled with a particular image and downbeat pop sound, it screams Lana.
I mean I appreciate Lana for what she does (I would definitely use her music in a film context), but I think ya'll are conflating her becoming popular through tumblr to her making everything about the tumblr culture popular.
Like I don't see anyone with a Lana'd imagine. Someone like Halsey is SJW'd, but she's not going on about the 50s and 60s.
You clearly just hate her for some reason Lana's visual aesthetic has been massively influential over the last four years, it's everywhere, from Melanie Martinez to Tove Lo (look at the original video for "Habits") to "Lean On" (the opening shot is practically a replica of the opening shot of "Born to Die"). Several album covers have just been posted in this thread that are blatant rip offs. Lana goes on about the 50s and 60s but she doesn't *look* like that, her videos are all modern.

See, I feel like that's actually the distinguishing freature of her sound. As someone who listened to RnB their entire life, I don't hear the stark difference in her "trip hop" to most electronically infused RnB songs.
When she came out, my first impression was of a yt girl doing her thing on urban beats (and I don't mean that racist'dly), just that it was a new sound.... Well not until the strings were factored in. That's what made her stand out for me. And of course her subject matter and lyrics.
