Now a 3-way tie with little in common! Some youngsters doing reggae about drugs, a posthumous smash from a legendary rocker and one of the breakthrough songs for hip hop as a genre. We starting off intense already, including a first 11
All good songs too (though the Lennon one is a bit narm for me). Was going to make a big deal of Kurtis being the #1 for 1980's list but apparently Laurie Anderson was 1981's #1 and we dumped her ages ago so oop. There's worse songs still in mind you.

Ya'll did Sucker MC's wrong. That song being that low is utterly disgusting.
Meh at The Breaks going. It's bonfide classic but like a lot of early 80s rap, is corny as hell.
For Kurtis Blow I prefer "Basketball"

Pass the Dutchie is okay. I'm not a stan of it tho.
Just Starting Over is nice.
Now I like The Breaks but it's one of those too long for its own good kind of songs and doesn't keep me all the way through.
Nothing bad.

Pass The Dutchie is so iconic nn, didn't the term start the "dutch(ie)" drug slang? They changed it to that to disassociate with the original title but everyone knew it was about drugs so the new title ended up becoming even more drug-associated.

Yes, early rap years are jarring for anyone not knowing what to expect. The scene shift even in this rate is amazing to watch/hear.

They tried to say it was about a cooking pot.
Fun Fact: Pass The Dutchie was the first video played by a black artist on MTV.

Speaking of...
44.
Grandmaster Flash - The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel
6.7235
1981 Rank: #9
#44 Scores
10 - MP2K, StonedSoulPicnic
9 - Changes, KingKunta, V3$$3L.
8.5 - Wicked, Pink Matter
8 - Tom Vercetti, Reverie
7.3 - Saskia
7 -
6.5 - Subomie, TheWayWeWere
6 - Ace Reject
5 - Fuzzylilkisses
4 -
3 -
2 - Eeveelution
1 - Buyonce1814
0 - Paul McCutie
Catchy but not my favourite from the Grandmaster. The samples are all cute and from great songs but spread over 7 minutes and patience can dwindle. There's worse left of course, but this isn't a major loss for me. Some of the upcoming cuts however...
43.
Pretenders - Back On the Chain Gang
6.7941
1982 Rank: #10
#43 Scores
10 - Ace Reject, V3$$3L.
9 - TheWayWeWere, StonedSoulPicnic, Saskia
8.5 - Pink Matter
8 - MP2K, Buynce1814
7 - Subomie, Wicked, Reverie
6 - Fuzzylilkisses, Changes
5 -
4 - Eeveelution, KingKunta
3 -
2 - Tom Vercetti
1 - Paul McCutie

Ace Reject called this his second 11 as if I would let that fly, kii. Poor Ace and poor Pretenders. This is a very pleasant song but like all Pretenders songs in the rate I could feel myself wanting to like it more than I did. Will Brass in Pocket make the Top 30 or will we see them again tonight?
42.
Run-D.M.C. - It's Like That
6.8059
1983 Rank: #9

As Prince would put it: controversy.
Reverie sis, are you pressed this comes up before Mariah's song in predictive search?
This feels classic to me, a lot more... close to rap as I knew it than a lot of the other songs here. As a white kid that knew nothing of rap history until the last few years even I knew this song before rating and I ain't even talking about the Jason Nevins mess. Even Paul gave this an 8 (nn let me double check the ballot tho cus that seems out of character) so this crash and burn ain't cute. Poor Run.

Was not feeling that Pretenders song at all. Not my thing. And yeah that Grandmaster flash song was but I actually liked it. I would've gave it a better score had it been more consistent. It's like that isn't run dmc's best song so i'm fine seeing it leave.

The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel is really cool at times but the editing/constant skipping annoys me
Nnnn I don't even like Mariah's like that! I was definitely too hard on them but I just wasn't feeling it atm. Not Paul being nicer than me

Songs like these are what I was hoping and expecting to find here. Like history being made, just a few tracks (though some lasting for ages nn) but what they represent is just interesting to finally see. Like Ace said about Joy Division in terms of quality vs. impact. Personally I think it has both but y'all had different ideas.
40.
Grandmaster Flash & Melle Mel - White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)

Like always, it's the songs that are not necessarily loved that go further but the ones that get the least hate. This makes sense, it's one of those rap records with a message. Not my favourite and it's no "The Message" but it's pleasant. Fun fact: Grandmaster Flash isn't actually on this, just Melle Mel. They just wanted to trick people into buying it I guess.

Afrika Bambaataa & the Soul Sonic Force - Looking for the Perfect Beat

take what I posted about Planet Rock times 10 here. Serious bop category here, the robot rock mixed in with the rapping. What kind of amazing collision of genres? Whew, why y'all hating on it? This could've made Top 20 or 10 and I wouldn't complain. Better than some **** y'all actually put in the Top 10.

I really enjoy It's Like That but I prefer Sucker Mc's even more.
The main reason I even half listen to early 80s rap is for the beat. The flow is so awkward to listen to at times.

Nah Billie Jean was the first video by a black artist to be put into heavy rotation.
Pass The Dutchie was the first overall I believe.
