As I posted in here before, I've been slowly getting into Mariah. I've only listened to the first 2 albums in completion a couple times to really get assimilated with them. So far I love Vision of Love, Emotions, MAKE IT HAPPEN Sometimes I'll be watching and get full body shivers

And knowing she is writing the music and lyrics makes her appeal to me more. THE TALENT

so I'm curious about something. I've only listened to her first 2 albums, but being a big fan of George Michael I decided to listen to her cover of 'One More Try'. Her voice is so much higher! It almost sounds like it might have been done with studio effects. I have no clue. Or is this just how her voice is now? It almost sounds unrecognizable

Mariahs voice goes though changes every couple of years, its part of what makes it so amazing.

Mariah's voice gets kinda shrill every now and then due to aging and it was indeed more audible on OMT's chorus

I wanna know more about ha and George's friendship. I'm pretty sure they had a lot of secrets/inside jokes when they were labelmates at Sony

I'm not sure, but I'd say her vocal approach is a bit more throaty now, as opposed to being "higher" per se. But Mariah won't always sound the way she does on the first two albums, even in her 90s discography. In those eras she was very chesty, aggressive (and a bit of a show off in emotions, even by her standards). Around Daydream she'll use a more rounded, mixed tone, also introducing her now signature whispery style (and expanding on that in butterfly). Late butterfly/rainbow gives us more tonality changes, same with the CB/glitter eras, emancipation, etc.

None of y'all mentioning that MIAMTEC in general is just messier when it comes to vocal production and that she sounds much more normal in Memoirs and Infinity

On the loaded topic of Mariah's voice, do any of you know if she was sick or something during the Music Box Tour? At a time when her voice should have been at its peak, the performances are really reined in and she shies away from a lot of big notes. I mean it's no Rainbow Tour But still, I've been wondering what was going on.

She was sick actually, her Proctor Theatre/Thanksgiving Special performance earlier that year was much better. Given that the MB tour was at the end of the year, she probably got a cold. Sucks, I really wish she had done a debut/emotions tour.

Yeah, she was definitely sick or going through vocal troubles at the time. Her televised performances were pretty rough as well. Then again, wasn't this a period full of emotional turmoil re: her marriage and the control issues? Mariah always sounds worse when she's not in a good place. That said, the music box tour had a couple of great moments:


^ her best emotions performance ever, imo.
