I love Michael Jackson but... I don't think he went through much evolution as a stage performer. It was always the same routines, the songs never really changed up, he Moonwalked exactly where people expected him to Moonwalk... he had a set of moves and moments that he employed in every show and you knew exactly what you were getting. Did he give his all on stage? Yes. But I wish there was some more innovation there.
On Madonna's early 90s tours, you start to see music videos created on stage. Old songs get new arrangements. On Blond Ambition she had just one (very new) identifiable dance to do on stage. And when she does Vogue again on The Girlie Show, she could have gone out and done that dance again, everyone knows and loves it, it's already iconic. Instead she dispenses with it and we never see Vogue presented like that again. Like A Virgin gets a new treatment on every tour from BAT forward.
The Drowned World Tour is - I think - really the one that tells people about the kind of performer Madonna is. Two 80s songs, with pretty much everything else on the set list devoted to 94-00. She's never going to be a "here are all the songs you know presented as they were" kind of entertainer. And that's why she has endured at the top tier of touring artists. People might say "oh there were too many new songs" but that means no Madonna tour is like any other. And the spectacle she presents on stage is one-of-a-kind. You see where your money is going. And you see an artist who's never at rest.
I asked him, "WHY CAN'T YOU JUST BE NORMAL FOR LIKE A WEEK."
I always thought that was a stone groove smash hit wonder, a fun frothy dance song, and then everywhere I go fans just HATE on it.
