Clinton doesn't need to mirror Trump in any shape of form, IMO. She needs to draw as stark of a contrast from his erratic behavior as possible. This controversy should blow over quickly especially if she has a strong first debate. The only thing she needs to do between now and then is craft her words more carefully.
People already know she's more than competent, but she cannot afford to make the sort of gaffes that Trump makes seemingly every other day. She's held to a completely different standard than him.

When you're voting for someone who will ban muslims, attempt to strike down gay marriage and questions people's ability to do their jobs based on their ethnicity then you can't just turn around and be offended when you're called out for your bigotry.

I think this is a silly faux controversy too, but a great number of Americans have trouble acknowledging their own behavior when they're being xenophobic, racist, misogynist, etc. This is particularly true on the Right where they have been coddling this sort of behavior for decades. They're hyper-sensitive to these labels even if the overwhelming majority of their actions and words indicate the accuracy of them.
Her problem was saying "half" of his supporters. I doubt this would even be much of a story at all if she just said "many" and tied it to concrete facts like she did in the alt-right speech.
