J.Lo and Mariah do not need to introduce themselves to a new generation though, they've had hits within the last 6-7 years. I'm talking about when we have teenagers and have to explain who Rihanna is to them.
Regardless, I don't even think a Greatest Hits album needs to be some huge success. Sure, you can attach a new single to it but that's not the point. It's just a collector's item for fans, a good collection of songs for casual listeners, and a way for new fans to get accustomed to an artist. They take no money to produce and by the time Rih releases one physical CDs will be indie and you won't need to recoup the price of printing them.m
