12:26 PM PT -- A rep from Vons tells TMZ the interaction between Zendaya and the checkout clerk did not involve race. The store has a policy limiting the amount that can be charged on a customer's credit card for gift cards. We're told the limit is $200, and that was the basis of Zendaya's discussion. The store adds the manager made an accommodation and allowed the singer to get $400 worth of gift cards.

It could've all been avoided had the cashier asked for an ID and matched it with the credit card.

when you go to a store do you ever give your entire wallet to the cashier? no.

what probably happened was Zendaya was told she can't buy a $400 gift card (above store's limit) pulled a fit because shes ZENDAYA and threw the wallet at the cashier as if saying "look I have the money" and the cashier threw it back.

Yeah, I know that trying to buy expensive giftcards is fishy. I deal with that everyday and scammers are booming now more than ever but she tossed her wallet. no excuse.

I think it has more to due with the fact that no one knows who she is, so she was treated like a regular person by the employee. Store policies trump customer demands.
