You don't need a mega, just like you don't need a Fairy-type pokemon or a dark-type Pokemon or a Pokemon with its hidden ability. Does that mean they're removed? No.
They nerf things all the time though. They nerfed various types in Gen 2 also. They nerf and buff various moves and abilities all the time; see Knock Off's BP increase. But they've never removed an important battle mechanic. All the features they removed are non-battle mechanics.
They've not removed the therian formes for the genies, or shaymin's sky forme. there's no reason for them to remove mega evolutions. The question is not whether megas will be removed - coz they won't - it's whether they'll continue to add any, and it's too early to definitely say that either way. This gen won't focus on megas as it's not a gen7 aspect, so they may keep them till postgame, or they might stop adding them. They won't be removed though. Soz.
