In the first rounds there are a lot of heats with like 50 people competing depending on the event, but you have to qualify of course.

I'm not 100% sure how it exactly works but the national federations decide who they send within quote places that are being giving to countries or continents.

They have heats, semi-finals and then finals.

So depends on the race you're watching.. if it's a final then yes they're only competing against the others in the race (who can be from the same country if they both make the final, by the way).

Otherwise for heats and semis it also will depend on the times the other races do, so you're technically competing with everyone in every race at that point to try make the next round

There is no international qualifing time. Something like that is only set by each national federation if they want to do that.

US doesn't have that. They give their places based on the results in the US trials for example.

There are 4/5 qualification heats for each event and only the 16 people with the best time get in, that's what happens at noon.

At 9, it's the semifinals and the final. The 8 people with the best times from the 2 semifinals get in the final where they compete for the medals.

That's about it.

Okay thanks ya, i'm now understanding better so far the swimming has been the most intriguing to me and are the games 24 hours non stop? I ask because I was up till 2am on Sunday watching but I'm not sure if it was a re-run

Think the thing you need to remember is: yes there are more than 200 countries in total at the olympics, but a lot of the small countries only have a very small team and only a couple of sports where they participate.
Not every country has a lot (or any) swimmers or fencers or whatever to pick from.

Fiji has Rugby as the national sport and is gold favorite there, but they barely have anyone in any other event.

Not sure what timezone you are, but local time in Rio the day starts at ~8 am and ends at ~1 am. So yeah it's a lot of sports, but not quite 24 hours.

as far as i know, they stop after swimming until like 2-3 AM but I am not certain
