I don't think that's a great comparison. As recently as the last worlds, Gabby was the all-around silver medalist.
While Smith indeed only ever medals in pommel.
Out of curiosity I looked to see how much scores would change if a non-specialist was dropped, based on qualifying scores, as there will be 4-member teams soon…
2012 Dropping Kyla Ross
Team would’ve won by 3.9.
2016 Dropping Gabby Douglas (let’s take Laurie’s uneven score from nationals of 15.15)
Team would’ve won by 7.59.
Dropping Laurie Hernandez
Team would’ve won by 7.41.
Well I guess when a team is that dominant it doesn't make a big difference.
Though...if you take away Shanshan and Linlin from China, the points lost would still put them 0.3 over US's actual score.
If you take away Eremia's beam from Romania, that only docks them 0.2 points.
