The growing minority population keeps it purple. They are a socially conservative state but minority voters are still overwhelmingly democratic and they make up a huge portion of the voting electorate

Crowds don't win elections. Ask Bernie Sanders. Notice who makes up these crowds and it is very telling of his support. Older white people and white men. Cant win elections like that anymore.

What "happened there" was a loss, plain and simple. Populist candidates attract bigger crowds but not necessarily the bigger number of voters accounting for average, less-involved voters. Plain and simple.

NC went blue in 2008 for Obama. I think there was a large African American turnout that year (which is why the GOP in that state tried to implement voter restrictions that "targeted African Americans with near-surgical precision").

You'd think these politicans would know better than to support polarizing and impossible things (such as a constitutional amendment banning marriage equality) that surely cost them votes. Oh well. I guess the votes from evangelicals must outweigh the votes from "socially-liberal" conservatives that get put off by that type of position.
Hillary doesn't draw big crowds because she's boring and everyone already knows her plans and records. We know what we're getting. Crowds =/= voting. It's all about organization and voting commitments.
