Cute. These days I rarely even go beyond the "behaviour" aspect of a relationship, where I look, he looks, we look -- but nothing happens.
I think that if I were in your shoes, I would try to stay as loose and flexible as possible, because, for me, guys can be tricky, especially in everyday circles. For me I am lucky that I am around people (I think), because I don't socialise in the gay areas of Toronto. I don't think I'm shy; I think I am more into spontaneous relationships, where I let things go with the flow and flow. (Many gay areas in Toronto foreclose this possibility.)
I would try to flex if a guy I like messaged me (back?). I wouldn't want to provoke or trigger anything, so I would remain flexible in my approach to him. Although I think this scenario would annoy me since it seems that I always want to "get on" with things
If you think there's potential, find some way to carry on, see how enthusiastic he is 
Just take it slow and see wht happens
