Not before you hatch it, but the moment the guy from the Daycare handles it to you the N/S/A is generated.

Nn I found this out the hard way going for a "quick drive" with bf earlier. Almost got a Sandslash around the American Embassy but I got an error message after throwing the ball.

I gained four levels and hit tonnes of Pokestops. I need to do a bit of sorting out with all my catches today and then I'm ready to take on the gyms etc
