The cover similarity + lead singles peaking @ #3-4 in the US + both albums seen as a critical and commercial failure (the iconique S&S Tore notwithstanding).
I love the song Survival. I can't believe some people think it's throwaway. It's a fitting opener, mellow and languid but with signature attitude.
I remember popping in the Bedtime Stories CD to listen to the album in full for the first time, and it was the first time I wasn't already familiar with an opening track. Survival was an such unexpected sound from her, and it made me look forward to the rest of the album. I fell in love with it immediately and it remains a favorite to this day. Snatched me this morning tbh.
Haters be damned. Bedtime Stories is one of her best albums. Almost every track is the right length (something that can't be said for Erotica or ROL, don't @ me), and as a whole the album is clear and concise. Beginning to end, there's not one Trolldonna moment (Don't Stop is noT Trolldonna, **** you). Even though it's toned-down from Erotica, it's still an incredibly honest, soul-bearing piece of art with something on its mind. The album's production is immaculate, with a subtlety and economy of sound that she really hasn't captured or explored since. Bedtime Stories is a perfectly packaged gift in powder-blue paper. The singles, their videos, the performances, are the ribbon tied up in a perfect bow.
