Nobody said it did. You'll notice that there's nobody here calling Pat Boone or KC and the Sunshine Band "legends", even though they're old and they were consistent hitmakers back in their day.
You become a legend by creating immortal classic albums and songs that are still remembered decades later, or majorly changing your genre, or having countless younger artists cite you as an inspiration and influence.

Maybe they're legends to you but not to me but they had litterally no impact on me.

Don't be so sure. Most of your faves were probably influenced by those old legends.

It's my opinion. Don't critize me for it. Older artists aren't legends to me because they haven't impacted me and their music is extremely boring and unlistenable to me.
|
Im curious; what "old music" have you tried listening to? Give me a few examples.

If you grew up with if, I get that. But I didn't, I grew up with other artists that I like better. There's a few older things I like, but a lot of it sounds dated boring and unlistenable and I like 2008-2012 things better.

if your fave is not there, then there's a 90% of chance he/she isn't a real respected acclaimed influential legend (mariah, celine and whitney are not there and they're not legends for example)

You mean the hall of fame of old white male should be taken seriously ?

What is sad is the majority of the music you like from 2008-2012 originated and pays homage to that 90s and 80s music that you so much hate. The only difference in what has changed is what is considered mainstream. Otherwise all music has stayed relatively the same whether you realize it or not. (Same beats, same flow, etc.) Hell we all saw this with the born this way/express yourself controversy.

Well the things they took inspiration from were all boring and uneventful to me. I've heard a fair share of older music because my family always puts older music on. Sadly I'm the only one who doesn't like it. I'll never understand what they see in it. To me, these me people took something old and modernized it, and it's those modern, (imo better) songs that are impactful to me. It's like saying the first iPhone works better then the iPhone 6s, things evolve, change, take from the past and turn it into something better This happens litterally all the time.
Agree with me or not it's my opinion what I like.

Girl, Madonna, other articles like the rolling stones and everyone's fave (the lastest ones being Katy) have stated Whitney should be introduced to the Hall of Fame. It has just never been brought up by the committee which is notorious for ignoring people from certain genres.
Whitney's voice shaped a generation. To say she isn't a legend or respected is fully ignorant.
Mariah voice is literally in GBWW. No one else of any ones faves here has that. To say she isn't a legend is fully ignorant.
Celine had one song to sale 30 million copies of an album. Something Madonna could never pull off. To say she isn't legendary is fully ignorant.
Please go get information and stop trying to be edgy.

Continuing on your opinion, who you currently consider legendary could never become legends because the next group of people will modernize music even more. That's the flaw in your argument, which presents a case that no one could ever become a legend. That's a fine argument but you also lose the right to call anything legendary from your own opinion.

I've already said that I enjoy Madonna's music and I think she's a pop icon. Yall act like it's a damn requirement to be in awe of her or something and anybody who isn't should be shot.

I hate Rock & Roll, to me it's just a bunch of weird crazy noise and people screaming, but if you like it then good for you I guess...

Lastly, the Rock and Roll hall of fame is not strictly for Rock and Roll musicians.
Rock and Roll encompasses all music people. You guys are on a forum about music. You should know this.

I just don't understand how the OP excluded MADONNA of all people. That's probably the only inexcusable misstep on this list - though I'd honestly throw Britney, Phil Collins, Billy Joel and maybe Christina on the list.
There is no way anyone in the WORLD can argue Madonna isn't a living legend. She's literally the biggest selling solo musician alive today - she literally is the one musician alive with the biggest amount of records sold.
She has defined and shaped pop music in ways some of the people on this list have NEVER DONE.

They're legends now. At least to me. They might be overtaken by newer artists, or maybe they'll modernize, we don't know what'll happen, and they'll stay legends until someone else makes better music. The difference is that we have so much technology and it's gotten so modern that I think it's more probable that these will be still modern years and years later for new generations. Listen to 70's or 80's music you know how hard it is just from hearing it. Most modern songs sound so modern that could still be released today and sound modern.
A lot of music in 2016 is like a step in the wrong direction to me and that worries me. It stopped evolving and we're going through a period of regression. But it'll be over in a few years thankfully.
If we continue on a downwards spiral, and no one improves from then, then I will call them legendary.
I'll also say that modern artists today or more impactful then anyone in the past has ever been. You've just yet to see the full impact.

Donna I'll agree on, but Prince was inducted about as early as he could have been. The rules say that your debut album has to be at least 25 years old before you're eligible for the HOF.
