This is all seems comically ridiculous, as though basic mathematics could instantly show that immediate departure may not be economically pleasant. Maybe "depart" in phases (if that's even possible).

If it's any solace these things are cyclical, we're going to see a tremendous liberal push back (I use the term liberal in the american sense specifically because a lot here are from the US). I just wonder how and what effect that would take.
But now with a Brexit government, the immigration laws are going to be tightened even more against non-EU immigrants as well as tightened against EU immigrants. The Tories pledged in their manifesto in 2015 to reduce net migration to the tens of thousands. They will still try to carry this through.
