Yah, in-game, you can get away with damn near anything. It's just that if you play competitive, it tends to kinda become sort of like second nature with movesets and the like.

For someone like me, I usually enjoy injecting a competitive nature to my Pokémon teams even for in-game. It just helps me feel immersed in the game itself when I put a lot of effort in procuring IVs, EVs and egg moves.

Very few legendary Pokémon have good shiny forms so this is no surprise. Magearna looks good in her regular colors.
