1. Should the song capture the general essence of the movie, a specific part of the movie, or could it go either way as long as it's effective and obviously pertains to the movie?
1a. Would it be more effective to write about the characters of the movie, or from any "lessons" that could be learned?
2. Can you write from the perspective of a side character? Like maybe how the main character personally affected them, for instance?
2a. Should character-perspective songs be attempted at all, or should these be more omniscient observer type of songs?
3. I know 8th answered this already, but for the rest of you guys: Will our songs be compared to actual soundtrack songs, assuming there are any?

1. Either works
1a. RE: "Lessons that can be learned" I feel like it should be explained as a direct result of the movie. For example, if your movie theme is "honesty is the best policy" and you want to write about that, it should be described as a result of the events in the movie, not a totally brand new original narrative.
2. I think that could work
2a. I think either would work.
I
personally would be most impressed with a song that can go inside the movie, so doing "synopsis via song" or tackling viewpoints from minor characters might be a little difficult if you're looking to impress me. Not impossible, just would need to be on a more advanced level.
