The AI has always been rather trash in Pokemon games sadly

Even tho one can throw around the "for tha kids" excuse, I find it to be more laziness than anything. The only games which were ever really difficult were the RBY ones, mainly because IVs and EVs didn't exist, and/or we were all too dumb to realize psychic wasn't super effective against ghosts like in the anime, and Mew wasn't in that truck.

I just realized, Normal is actually a pretty tough type for gym leaders. Whitney and Norman were both hard as **** for me on at least some playthroughs, as by that point iirc you have 0 (GSC) or I think 2(RSE) available fighting lines, and makuhita is ugly so if I didn't choose Torchic and powerlevel it by that point, I was screwed. I think gyms should have uncommon types first like dragon, fairy, steel (+normal

) when you probably can't just go in and solo it with the one pokemon in your team with supereffective stab. And then they can flip the script later with traditionally "basic" types like rock, which use sandstorm and a Tyranitar (probably underleveled like Lance's Dragonites/Falkner's Pidgeottos) etc.
