A cat rubbing itself on your knee is not affection, he/she is just doing it for its own pleasure. Once a cat realizes that you're only worth food and shelter it becomes solitary and would much rather be alone than be with you. Dogs genuinely seek human companionship, they always have for thousands of years which is why they make good pets.
It's obvious that cats are uncomfortable with domestication. They also has no manners, jumping on tables and ledges and stuff. Hit a dog once or twice and he'll never do it again, hit a cat and it will run away and never come back.
