Madonna has always self-educated herself. I guess that makes her "academically" smart. I would say that she's just a really talented artist though - which makes her smart.

That's usually just an indicator of an extensive vocabulary, which means that the person reads a lot, which is probably a sign that the person is somewhat intelligent - yes.
Madonna was smart for her time. When she was in her prime. Her views just seem problematic now because we've grown up in a completely different environment than what her generation was accustomed to.

Gaga coming up with songs like Donatella and subsequently killing her career isn't smart.
Beyonce is smart enough to let others guide her career, release great music, and stay on top.
What Gaga creatively did with The Fame, The Fame Monster, and Born This Way is better than anything Beyonce has ever done and it was all her. Beyonce has a team of people that can make good visuals and production for her but anyone with money could get that.
