It was big because you had a historic primary, either the first woman presidential candidate of a major party or the first African American candidate of a major party.
Obama was missing in those states because those states moved up their primaries without the consent of the Democratic Party so instead they were reprimanded and Obama (as well as Edwards) decided to pull their names from Michigan (and not campaign in Florida) due to Democratic Party pressure. Hillary was salty as hell and did not
Those caucuses also didn't keep a popular count this year either. However their totals are estimated and are included in the totals this year. The totals from 2008 did not have those state estimates.
