When they weren't out in the cornfields chasing after UFOs, they had comedy monster of the week episodes to balance the dark themes. It's always been this way and it's truly the greatest.
Now in some aspects this is entirely true although Olivia and Fringe wouldn't exist without the other. Its plot momentum and narrative development as well as its performances are definitely far stronger. It lacks The X Files classics/heights though.

Because for some strange reason critics stopped praising it when things got experimental in s5 but hopped right back on the bandwagon of calling it one of the greatest ever when it reflected the show's initial tone in its last season.
