Mama's hooked on Mary Kay.
Brother's hooked on Mary Jane.
Daddy's hooked on Mary two doors down.
Mary, Mary quite contrary.
We get bored, so, we get married
Just like dust, we settle in this town.
On this broken merry go 'round and 'round and 'round we go
Where it stops nobody knows and it ain't slowin' down.
This merry go 'round.
This is a legit lyrical masterpiece.
Why didn't you say this last season I would have given you all 10's
So, does this competition favour artsy fartsy lyrics that don't make any sense, or real sensical emotive lyrics?
It favors good lyrics. You can write in any style or genre as long as your lyrics are quality. Everything from heartfelt ballads to pop bops to satellite stream-of-consciousness songs went #1 last season.

This works.
I think the judges won't appreciate "artsy-fartsy" lyrics if they're not genuine. Don't try to write something that you don't feel connected to, because it will show.
