As Kang. wrote to me: "It's the greatest song of all time but sorry it would just be such a boring winner, had to apply the curve extra hard to at least give her a challenge."
Overall score: 8.98 High score: 10 (supaspaz, Lucas32, Tom Vercetti, Eeveelution, Venus, Vilppu, Price of Fame, holocene, Blueberry Mary, conatus, ClarksonSlays, Stevie, Kang., Reverie, Mirrorwriting)
Low score: 5 (Jackson)
If you take Grimes at her word, Art Angels’ folksy-electro final track is about an Amazonian butterfly experiencing the deforestation of her home. A cursory glance at the lyrics, however, suggests the metamorphosis is metaphorical—a symbol for the young woman who has finally come to terms with the hurtful critiques that galvanized her creative process. Effervescent yet contemplative, it finds a strange cross-section between EDM, country and New Age music, layered with “so much Enya synth ****” that it kept crashing Grimes’ computer as she mixed the song. In one of the most surprising and impressive performances of the rate, it finishes as the highest-ranking non-single.
Best bit: “If you're looking for a dream girl/I’ll never be your dream girl” offers a potent closing note for the album
I was sure RAWM would win I don't know how she created such a flawless anthem.
I think either Kill V. Maim or King Kunta will win. I think KK has a bigger shot because I don't think I've ever heard of someone strongly disliking it.
Edit: Lovely write-up for Butterfly what an amazing song.
