Surprise?! Before the countdown even began, many of you were already complaining about Carly’s impending domination and the boring inevitability of Emotion’s beloved second single winning the whole shebang. Well, it doesn’t always pay to be the frontrunner. Whether she suffered from inflated expectations or light sabotage by a handful of voters, Carly came up short in the end by less than 10 points. Let’s not focus on that sad reality, though, when there’s so much to celebrate about the myth, the meme, the masterpiece. This fizzy rush of an opening track—which emerges from the foggy night on a lone synth saxophone so epic that it became a viral sensation and charges with abandon into the tunnel-vision ecstasy that another person can bring, the rest of the world be damned—is perfect. Even Lucas32 couldn’t deny it.
Best bit: the twinge of desperation in Carly’s pleas, all sinners and saints, that hints at a darker scenario in which she is the other woman, making a frantic final bid for the thing she can never have
