Madonna's impact in the 80's doesn't extend beyond visuals. Visually and auditorily, Whitney was and is much bigger. People wanted to dress and look like Madonna in the 80's. People wanted to dress, look and SOUND like Whitney. Her presence had much more weight to it, especially from a cultural standpoint. And it's counterproductive to bring up sales given the fact that Madonna released 4 albums, a remix album and 2 soundtracks in the 80's alone. Stacked up against Whitney's 2 albums, it will not be an even playing field. However, I do find it interesting that Whitney is not far at all from Madonna when it comes to total sales in the 80's with much less output. Interesting.

And stop using some textbooks written by white journalists to conclude that Madonna is the be-all, end-all of the 80's. Look in a book on African American culture and you'll see Whitney right with Prince and MJ. But guess who won't be in there? I guarantee those same textbooks YOU read also lists Whitney in there somewhere. Whitney is much more widespread in her impact and influence.

Yea she COULD‘VE BEEN been the biggest in the 80's had she been more active, but she WAS NOT unfortunately.

Paula Abdul had higher #1s per single release ratio than Whitney in the 80s, so I guess she was bigger?

I never said she was more successful. I said she was bigger. They're not necessarily the same thing. Whitney had a larger commercial presence due to having such high sales from only two albums and having a record 7 consecutive #1 hits out of 10 singles, which is FAR less than the 20 or so that Madonna released. Not to mention her albums stayed atop the Billboard 200 for a combined 25 weeks. How long did Madonna's albums stay up there for in the 80s?

But she didn't. Out of the 10 solo singles Whitney released in the 80s, 7 went to #1. Out of the 6 Paula released, 4 went to #1. 70%>>> 66.6666%

You can't be this dumb. Just because an artist releases more albums, doesn't automatically make that artist more successful. Comparatively, Whitney was bigger because her albums had more longevity, she had more consecutive hits, she set records with her albums and she sold a substantial amount from only 2 releases. Whitney was one of the most active artists of the 80's. She had a new album, single, video or tour every year from 1985- onward. And you're forgetting that Madonna came out 3 years before Whitney. Whitney was more than active enough. It wasn't her fault that Madonna was so much older than her and virtually all of her contemporaries.

Comparing Beyonce and Adele is nothing like comparing Prince and Whitney. Whitney was the singer's singer, and was already changing pop music right out of the gate through the way she sang. Adele not so much. Not the same at all.
