In the UK, people complained about the opposite, that the deadline to register as a new Labour Party member was too late in the day and allowed people who were just registering in order to manipulate the Leadership contest without actually being real supporters of the Labour Party. Literally thousands of attempted Labour Party registrations were disqualified because of this very reason.

I don't know what the optimal cut-off date should be.

Well closed primaries shouldn't exist imo. Semi-closed (allowing Independents to vote) at most.

Only about 1% or so, but the race wasn't close as Corbyn won by a landslide anyway, and it was a first past the post vote, so the result would not have been effected in that instance.

The US Presidential Primaries can be very close though and with it being a proportional allocation of delegates, then each % is significant.
