When stations play songs in the middle of the night, they're testing. Fewer people are listening at night and in the early morning (at hours like 3 or 4 AM), so the logic is that you first test a song with a smaller audience and move on to a larger audience (plays during the day) if they're receptive.
Bigger stations are often slower to pick up new songs than smaller stations because their airplay is worth more, so they really want to make sure that they're playing what people want to hear.
The playlist addition might signify that they will add it soon, though. Can't be sure.
