I think this comment would be fair about some of Justin's music (although not all of it). The jury's out on Zayn - he has said that he had little creative control with 1D, and was very unhappy with their musical direction. I think we should define him by his output as a solo artist, and if he keeps releasing alternative urban music then that's the kind of artist we should see him as, not a 'wannabe'
