He's still a pop act turned wannabe "urban alternative" act. The Weeknd released two songs with Max Martin. He is still a R&B artist, first and foremost.

BBTM and MoM are similar, both kinda dark albums about love, sex and drugs and very dark themes. They both have the crossover pop/r&b songs. They aren't identical but it isn't a reach to say they are similar.
