Just heard 7 Years and had to run here to see if it's charting. I guess it's a reason to start following the charts again. All the songs in the top 10 is CRAP except 7 Years!

LY is the number one song WW according to United World Tracks year end so far, do you think same will have for the US?

Love Yourself, Work, or Sorry won't be the #1 Song of 2016 lol. I don't know why the thought is so common.
The #1 song of each year is an absolute smash that breaks records.
TiK ToK, Rolling in the Deep, Somebody That I Used to Know, Thrift Shop, Happy, and Uptown Funk!.
All broke so many records -- sales records, airplay records, stream records, spent so many weeks at #1, and had humongous longevity with overall charting.
Work / Love Yourself / Sorry aren't average #1's, but they certainly aren't record breaking #1's. When an undeniable huge smash comes that gives serious records a run for money, we can say that'll likely be the #1 song of 2016.

Assuming one comes out. Music industry has been so dull lately. LY is building that lead at number one already on UWC year end. I want a smash to come out soon! But there doesn't seem to be anything coming right now

We still have time. Blurred Lines didn't smash til June.
The last time a song wasn't a huge record-breaking smash and ended up #1 on Year-End was 2006 (Daniel Powter - "Bad Day") and 2001 (Lifehouse - "Hanging by a Moment"). So we'll see.
And the trend this decade is an unknown/completely unexpected artist snatching the #1 song of the year.
Ke$ha was unknown before TiK ToK, Adele had no hits in US prior to RITD, Gotye was unknown before STITK, Macklemore was unknown prior to TS, Robin & Pharrell hadn't had a hit in years prior to BL/Happy, and Mark Ronson was unknown here before UF!. Someone random will likely come and get the #1 hit of 2016; and not a household artist.

Lies...Chasing Pavements was a hit and Robin Thicke was quite relevant in the R&B community.

I think it's gonna be Sorry, LY or Work lol. Blurred Lines wasn't #1 btw.
While you're right in that the #1 song of the year is usually a massive smash, timing is still the biggest factor. And most, actually ALL, of those songs came out very early in the year. TT was #1 in January, so was TS, so was Happy, so was UF. STIUTK and RITD both in April?
It's already April this upcoming week...lol. And like you said, the 3 current contenders may not be record breaking massive but they're all still very huge songs and building big leads. Work might even get 10 weeks at #1...

Chasing Pavements was one minor hit. It wasn't a Top 10, or even Top 20. She was virtually unknown to the US public.
And I never said Robin Thicke wasn't relevant in the R&B community. I just said he hadn't had a hit in years. When was his last chart hit before Blurred Lines if you disagree?
Nothing I said was exaggerated lol.

It's still pretty early though. We have 8 more months until the tracking period is over.
If a song that was See You Again sized came in April/May just like it, that'd even be enough to be #1 of the year. If a song was Trap Queen sized and came in April/May just like it, that'd be enough to be #1 on Year-End. If it's past May and no song is bigger than Work/Sorry/LY well then I'd say it'd be one of them.

Lost Without You reached #14. Not a huge hit but Thicke wasn't exactly unknown.

Yes... six years before Blurred Lines.
I never said he was unknown. I just said he didn't have a hit in years. Which is true?

Robin only had 1 moderate hit, six years ago. It was completely unexpected he'd have the #2 song of 2013.

It peaked at number 21, TF? Also went platinum.

The point of the post was she hadn't had a huge real hit, and she was unknown to most of the public.
But as usual, you nitpick posts and go out of your way to argue. Last I have to say regarding it.

Everyone else is correcting you as well, so don't single me out. You said she didn't have a hit. Chasing Pavements was a hit and it built up her momentum. She wasn't unknown either seeing as the album sold quite well. I evn knew who she was during this time.

I hope you're right. Had Hello hit the charts at the beginning of this chart year instead of three weeks earlier I'd say Adele would have it. She will still reach 5 million with Hello, but its massive sales and biggest sales numbers came in the last three tracking weeks of the 2015 Chart Year. I think LY and Work are worthy of Top Five YE H 100 songs, but Work's sales are really rather weak. Even Bad Day eventually sold over 3 million downloads all those years ago. The monster hits can still sell 3.5-4 million even now, and LY and Work aren't going to get there.

19's sales more than doubled after 21's release. Hitting 1-1.5 million albums in 2009 was a lot easier, and it's just now getting to 3 million after 25's boost. I think CP actually stalled in the 60s on the Hot 100, and once again most of its sales came after 21's release. Adele had some moderate AAA success, but she was still virtually unknown by a significant majority of Americans prior to RITD & 21.

Lost Without You didn't even reach 1 million downloads until after the BL boost, and his follow up CD at Urban greatly underperformed with smaller singles. So BL's success was definitely not a given, and especially not expected at levels anywhere near what it actually achieved.
