Because they are a bastardisation of the characters for the most part. Things have been righting themselves somewhat with this soft reboot though, since it established it as a complete separate world from the comics.
That said they are still really bad when it comes to women and minorities. For a franchise that's literally about the minority struggle they really should get their **** together on that front. It's not asking for much and we've been hammering on about that point for way too ****ing long.
