They use that homophobia as a reason to bully you.
And they do it for fun or because to them, you're an eyesore

Japanese people are very traditional so I can imagine them being homophobic overall.

Despite the huge yaoi/BL culture gay support in japan is strictly fantastical. Fans are not really supporting same sex relationships. The 'uke' is just a replacement for a girl with characteristics of a girl but 'he' doesn't pose a threat to the female reader because he's male. Also the whole forbidden love thing makes it more exciting I guess.
But you could be gay in Japan and get no hate. You could be anything (dress/live wacky). People may have issues with it but bc it's Japan no one will voice it in public and keep the 'honne tatemae' and go about their life, which makes sense if they aren't being affected by it (Americans and Muslims take note). I guess the bullying/discrimination comes from within families, peers and associates. Families are becoming less of an issue nowadays. Yes there are really ingrained core traditional values in households but it's losing its influence, as shown especially with the increasing number of unmarried and childless people (main issue of homosexuality is deviance from traditions). And generally inter familial bonds aren't that strong in Japan compared to the West, especially emotionally, so it's no big deal if your parents disapprove (on both sides).
Japan is definitely a lot more ahead w LGBT issues than say Korea/China, but given it's economic development/standing, it's social development should be a lot higher.

Answering to the current topic: What's it like being gay in Asia.
I'm from Indonesia and from my experience as long as you're not too public about it, no one will know/talk ****. Pretty tolerant I guess considering it's a Muslim majority country. I identify as bi and some of my friends already know my sexuality and at first they were shocked but aren't really saying anything mean and have no problems with it. It doesn't change the way they see me. I try not to talk about it to everyone but also don't mind if people ask about it politely. I avoid to be openly out because of the prejudice. Once they know the person, it's like whatever.

Also, does any of you watch Asia's Next Top Model? I haven't started watching this season yet. I'm glad Kelly is repping Indonesia as a judge. Fills in the gap when Nadya left in cycle 3.

cant speak for japanese people in japan but i was given a lot of leeway as a foreigner. I never had someone say or do something anti gay to me. but japan is slowly getting better with lgbt rights litttle by little. they are still traditional so dont go their rainbows blazing,

I'm glad I'm from a country whose the majority are buddhists so the people are more tolerant, ofthentimes if u walk with ur bf/gf, they just stare, perhaps gossip without u hearing. Gay people are loved by the girls, gay-owned beauty shops or clothes store tend to do really well.
Of course, gays are oftentimes made fun of, sometimes in derogating way, but people wont harm you bcuz ure gay althu some a**hole in schools would verbally bully you.
I like how Thai are more gay-friendly tho, been there once, loved it!

Is homosexuality a sin in Buddhism? If not, then how come a lot of Buddhists are against it?

Yeah Abrahamic religions are the majority here in Maritime Southeast Asia/Maphilindo, so you can tell how bad it is. I'm more concerned with Malaysia and Brunei though. They are a lot more of devout Muslims than Indonesians.

from my understanding it isnt a sin. Buddha said that sexual misconduct was bad but people think that he meant adultery and rape. I think its not that alot of Buddhist are against it, more so alot of Asians are. Cause in Rome homosexuality was like a norm and so was cross dressing in some pacific cultures ( where the cross dressers would be considered a 3rd gender) but that all changed when western culture came and said it was bad.
