It is very odd though how Problem debuted with 440k out of nowhere. Those aren't just "big" numbers, they're kinda massive. Only Taylor and Katy (2/3 of the biggest digital females) have opened with more.

Even My Everything opened with under 175K first week, like nothing she's ever done since Problem or before has been able to come close to what it did. There was clearly just something in the water for her the week she released it, and everything went golden.

If you compare all her other non-Problem debuts (The Way, Break Free, Bang Bang) which all did 150-230K and account the digital decline then compare to Focus / Dangerous Woman she isn't really declining badly.

Well she had preorders for about a week before the actual release too.

I don't know. You could argue that maybe it actually was Iggy & Ariana coming together that really boosted it, but I don't see logically on why Ariana & Nicki did half of it then.

@Mezter the night Problem was released though it went straight to like #10 at Midnight based on pre-orders. So it probably had like 10-20K preorders. Nothing massive (100K+ preorders) or it would've immediately jumped to #1 at Midnight.

& it kept a huge lead on Pop Bars throughout the week which shows it wasn't pre-order reliant.

Appreciate your time to write all of this, it's nothing but the truth. "Problem" was just a phenomenon first-week seller, y'all should just recognize the sucess of this huge hit.

Personally, I believe it was a combination of many factors:

1. There was definetely a hype growing for this young beautiful girl with so much potential.
2. The song is pop perfection and has a huge replay value.
3. Song fit perfectly with radio those days, it was like the perfect song which was missing.
4. Sales were pretty healthy during the first months of 2014, there were huge sellers like "Happy", "All of Me" and "Dark Horse", that there was a public interested to buy another song, and since "Problem" had universal appeal, it worked perfectly.
5. The promo was on point during those days.
6. Iggy Azalea was the breakthrough artist and she was just starting her sucess with "Fancy", so her name on "Problem" also helped.

Oh really? I didn't follow the charts as heavily back then so I thought that most were from pre orders. When Focus came out I remember some poster saying that she's not really underperforming, but Problem just majorly overperformed. I think that's true. The song was good, The promo was on point, and I do think Iggy helped a bit because everyone was excited for both of them while they were on the come up.

"Problem" debuted with its amount of sales because of how big Iggy was at the time with "Fancy" as well as Ariana's fanbase that she had grown from her debut era. Plus, "Problem" was actually a good song, which "Focus" and "Dangerous Woman" are not.

Focus was actually dropped from Ariana's album lol, and the label even renamed the CD Dangerous Woman! Until the last few days the preliminary title was Moonlight. This was discussed in the Top Ten recap yesterday.
