A lot of the songs on TOW are well-crafted pop songs with killer melodies, just like her later albums. They're just basic-sounding because she didn't use great pop producers. If she were to re-record the album with the same producers from E•MO•TION, y'all would love it

Her songwriting changed and improved since the Tug of War era tbh, but yeah some songs have a lot of potential, so maybe with more pop producers it would be closer to what we're all loving about her nowadays. It's still a chapter of her musical career and I think it's interesting to see the evolution of an artist, some artists don't evolve at all and Tug of War definitely represents the fact that Carly is not one of them
