I'm half Japanese and this is sorta true but lord the dramatics.

Despite the huge yaoi/BL culture it's strictly fantastical. Fans are not really supporting same sex relationships. The 'uke' is just a replacement for a girl with characteristics of a girl but 'he' doesn't pose a threat to the female reader because he's male. Also the whole forbidden love thing makes it more exciting I guess.

You could be gay in Japan and get no hate. You could be anything (dress/live wacky). People may have issues with it but bc it's Japan no one will voice it and keep the 'honne tatemae'. Japan is definitely a lot more ahead w LGBT issues than say Korea/China, but given it's economic development/standing, it's social development should be a lot higher.

It's bad but not the worst. No violence, thankfully. Only stupid restriction laws and some hate speech. Usually it's a very taboo topic. But now everyone is kinda more open both in supporting and protesting. A mess. But the younger generation is definitely more accepting. Only the older ones who still holding to the conservative views, once they'll die, I hope it'll get better and hopefully be the first country to legalize gay marriage in Asia. There is a growing LGBT movement although still limited due to the government restriction

oh so it's not as bad as I thought it was! It's great to see that people are accepting LGBT people in Indonesia, especially when it's muslim majority country! Someone told me that people who are against it saw it as a "Western thing" and that they should be looking up to Arab countries, is that true?
