Ask him to teach you how to squat with a barbell! It's the most effective way.

Barbell is generally better for most exercises, bench included, but if you don't have a spotter then dumbbells will be fine.
I go alone and use the bar, but I make sure I lift way below my maximum so that I never get myself pinned. I've done it before and it's really scary.

I'll generally push myself to failure w/ chest on the machines after using the bar, which isn't as effective, but it's definitely safer.
