I went to Malaysia for vacation multiple times or so.
It's a multi-cultural country, so you'd expect some cultural fusion once you go there - much more than Singapore. Although it's not easy to describe Malaysia as a whole but I can break it down for you;
Quote:
For beach enthusiasts/somewhere to relax/outdoor activities - Langkawi, Pulau Pinang and Kota Kinabalu are your top choices, three of these places have spectacular views. The beaches are gorgeous and you'd enjoy the activities each can offer.
For places with rich cultures - Melaka and Selangor. It's filled with religious monuments, cultural heritage. If you're interested in learning about different world/culture/religion, deepen your knowledge about them then these places are for you.
For great nightout/shopping - The city itself, Kuala Lumpur. Things in Malaysia are considerably cheap. Malls are stretched out almost everywhere in the city. Obviously it's filled with touristy man-made destinations. It basically serves as a shopping hotspot.

When it comes to people in Malaysia in my experience, most of them are quite nice and crimes are less likely to happen compared to its neighbouring ASEAN countries such as Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia or Vietnam where you can easily get mugged. Although pick pocketing can occur at times but just be aware when you're in crowded places.
All in all it's an interesting country. Just like United States, you have to explore different states because they're all different from each other.
BUT if i could choose between Malaysia and Singapore, I'd choose Singapore. Only because it's much prettier and everything is close to each other. I'm also a sucker for innovative designs

Some people I know would choose Malaysia in heartbeat though because everything there is super cheap which is true, for example in the UK where I live, 10 GBP is only enough to get you one plate of food at a decent restaurant. In malaysia you can probably get like, 5 plates in a decent restaurant.
