ANTI Rihanna

1. Consideration f/ SZA - The opening track to Rihanna's 8th studio album, and a good one at that. It features lyrics such as 'I got to do things my own way darling,' and I interpret this song as a massive f**k you to everyone around her who say she has to do things which fit the 'perfect pop star' image, which is what IMO she had to do with Loud. Her and SZA sound so amazing together, they almost sound like the same person at parts and it took me a while to distungish when SZA was singing and when Rihanna was singing, the beat goes hard. A perfect opening track - 9.4
2. James Joint - The first interlude of the album, and I completely understand why it's the 2nd track. People were confused as why there was one song and an interlude straight after, but to me the opening track was like the intro and this is the first 'interlude' to the album. The song features lyrics such as 'Here come the police, they know 'bout your history.' I don't smoke weed or any other substance, but I'm pretty sure if I did this song would be my #1 played song while high. The outro is one of my favourite parts of the song, it's so soothing. She first premièred this song on 4/20 last year, and I didn't pay much attention to it. While it is one of my least fave songs on the album, it's still a good song which I don't get bored of. - 7.8
3. Kiss It Better - Wow. This songs does amazing things to me, it's 100% in my trinity from the album. I'll be the first to say when she posted the snippet of this to Instagram, I really wasn't feeling it - maybe because I was still addicted to Nothings Promised (still not over it not being on the album) - but wow, the full thing changed my mind. Such an 80's vibe I get from this song, and Amy Winehouse vibes (which I get from a few tracks actually). 'What are you willing to do? Tell me what you're willing to do?' she asks in the song. I'm not 100% sure what the song is actually about, but my interpretation is her being in love with someone but it's a rocky relationship, with its ups and downs. I can't wait to see her perform this song on tour, the guitars riffs, the insturmental, her god like vocals >>>>. The only critizim about this song (and I don't really care about it) is the Verse 1 and Verse 2 are pretty much identical, but I don't mind that. - 10.0
4. Work f/Drake - The lead single from the album, I remember a few weeks back when this debuted on radio (Capital.Fm for me), and at first (and still now) I didn't understand what she was saying. But that for me, is not an issue! It's such a laid back song, but at the same time a twerk-anthem. I think they did make the right decision to make this the lead single, 'No time to have you lurking,' she says with her thick accent which is really noticeable on this song. The chorus is catchy and I can't help wanting to sing along to this track, I almost want to edit it and call it 'Werk' on my iTunes. I like Drake's verse on the song, I don't necessarily think it's needed but I do like it, and them harmonizing together is also godly. Their collaborations NEVER fail to amaze to me, so I knew I'd love this song. I really can't think of any criticize about this, but she needs to drop the video because it has really high chances of going #1, and she better do a WMN/Work medley on tour. - 9.7
5. Desperado - I will admit in the first few days of the album dropping I paid this (and Y, ISI) dust. And I regret that now. I love love love this song, and I can imagine the video being a cowboy/rodeo-type theme. It's really something she has never done before IMO. 'But I don't wanna be alone,' this song while it goes IN beat wise, I think it leaves Rih almost vulnerable. It shows how many men have come and gone in her life, and it's almost like she's used to it. I love love love love the background vocals on this song. The chorus is catchy and her tone is awesome. - 9.8
6. Woo - The first (and only [?]) song which is clear that her 'rumoured' love partner Travis Scott was involved with. I really don't mind this collabartion as I love Travis Scott's music, (but hate him as a person). I heard that Abel actually was involved with this song aswell. I love the auto-tune they use on her voice, and just love how they make her voice sound through-out the song especially 'I don't even really care 'bout you no more!' It's a song that urban radio would EAT up. I think something like this would have been on the 2014/2015 version of R8 when Ye was executive producer. The only criticzm is the song doesn't really go anywhere as the start is such a BANG! But I like it, and I'm obsessed with 2:30 onwards. - 8.3
7. Needed Me - Mustard. On. The. Beat. When I first heard that I was like ugh, this is gonna sound like every other DJ Mustard song... but boy was I wrong. I was expecting rap type music (a.k.a. POTR) but this song NEEDS to be a single. It contains some of my favourite lyrics from the album, 'Had some fun on the run though I give it to you' and 'Tryna fix your inner issues with a bad bitch, didn't they tell you that I was a savage?' Boy, Idk who she pissed off in this song but she went IN. I find it funny that people think this is about Jay + Bey because of 'on the run' and whenever I hear the song I just imagine Rih + Jay having an affair, which makes me laugh everytime. Anyway, the neeeeddeedd me chorus and her background vocals are immense. Incredible, one of my fave vocals off of the album. Needs to be a single. Say. No. More. - 10.0
8. Yeah, I Said It - One of the shortest off the album, but my most played (?) maybe because it's so short. Another amazing song, I get Tinashe/RnB vibes from it. I never thought she would sing something like this, but I'm glad she did. 'Up against the wall, we don't need a tidal' yes, I know she says title but singing Tidal is just so much more fun. 'Yeah, I said it babe' she sings through-out the song. I love the last verse the most. I wish it was longer but hey-ho! This would be a great interlude or a mashup with WYT on tour. I love it. - 9.0
9. Same Ol' Mistakes - The longest song on the album, and the song which was recorded a week before ANTI dropped. I do love this song, but I wish it was shorter as it doesn't go anyway for me after the 3:00 mark or so. I've never heard the original so I won't bother comparing them, but it's such a chill track. Another track for people who get high, tbh. Her voice really suits this song, I love how she almost changed her voice to suit the song. 'Feel like a brand new person, but I don't care I'm in love.' The beat is addictive, and she really went in with the background vocals (noticeable on the entire album). Actually, scrap what I said about it being too long 3:00-3:30 is heavenly. - 8.2
10. Never Ending - UNDER RATED, UNDER RATED, UNDER RATED. It's like CKB's sister. 'Ghost in da mirror' & 'A drug and a dream' are lyrics she teased on twitter way before this was released. I am obsessed with her vocals, it's so soothing and relaxing. I do see a lot of people paying this dust, and it makes me mad. I love the guitar and I really hope she does this one on tour because I think the live vocals for this song mixed with CKB would be perfect. The outro is also amazing. - 9.8
11. Love On The Brain - PERFECT, PERFECT, BYE. BYE. Without a doubt in her top 5 songs of all time and my favourite from the album. The fact she was meant to perform this at the Brits last year and never did upsets me. Her vocals are as powerful as I've ever heard before, I really didn't think she would be capable of this but clearly she is. The obvious Amy Winehouse influence's make it even better. My favourite part of the song is her tone on, 'Oh, and baby I’m fist fighting with fire, just to get close to you, can we burn something babe? And I run for miles just to get a taste' Just WOW. This was my fave along with KIB, from the 1st listen. I really can't praise her vocals enough espically on the 2nd verse. I imagine this being performed with an organ instrument in a church or something, lol. She really slayed me here. - 10.0
12. Higher - Again, perfect. A great follow on from LotB. I died when she posted these snippets on Instagram last year. I can't believe it actually made the album, I honestly died when I saw it on the tracklist. I, unlike some, love her vocals on this song. I think the whole point of the song was for the vocals to be strained. 'You light my fire, let's stay up late and smoke a J' I really can't praise this song enough. It's one of my favourites, even though it's so short Perfect, and again with the Amy influences which I adore. - 10.0
13. - Close To You - A great closer to the standard version of ANTI. Her ballads in the past 2 albums have been incredible, this and 'Stay' have to be my favourites. It shows her vunerable side, a lot like 'As Real As You And Me' from HOME. 'But I'm in love, can't blame me for checking' her vocals AGAIN are amazing. It's incredible to see her vocal growth from when she first started, or even from GGGB to this. Incredible. It really is just a piano and her vocals, but that alone makes it one of the best from the album. - 9.9
14. - Goodnight Gothham - This interlude to the deluxe songs was originally going to open the standard version, and was originally called A Night/Only If For A Night, until they changed it back to the original title of the insturmental before it had lyrics added to it. It samples Florence and The Machine's song, and I think it's an amazing interlude espically the last couple of lines where her vocals become distorted. I really am intrigued to hear the 3min+ version with Rih's vocals because I have no idea how they would have made it into an actual song. I would also like to know what the R8 exprience in Paris was for with this song. - 8.0
15. - Pose - 'YASSSSSS BITCH' I think is all I need to say for this song. I love it, it's soooooo messy and catchy. I'm obsessed and never thought she'd do anything like this on ANTI, but again, she never fails to surprise me. When I first heard it, I was soooo shocked. It's something Nicki would do, but Rihanna makes it her own song. And yes, I am giving it a 10, 'All my haters sound so broke' It's just a big **** YOU too all of her haters, really. Also the Flaccid line gets me EVERYTIME. - 10.0
16. - Sex With Me - The closer to the deluxe album, and a great closer at that. 'Sex with me so amazing.' Again, an amazing song from an amazing album. I'm actually running out of things to say now. But I love the small auto-tune they used on the song, and I love the beat and the bg vocals. - 9.5

1. Consideration - Great opening track. This sets a mood for the album, and that's exactly what an opening track should do. While this is a new sound for Rihanna, it still fits her island vibe perfectly. 8/10
2. James Joint - It's a little weird to put an interlude as the second track, but it's not too bad. It does what it's supposed to, which is set up the next track. Still, it's something I wouldn't really listen to unless it was just playing in the background when I'm doing something else. 4/10
3. Kiss It Better - This screams hit single. The opening drums taps into the sexy and sultry guitar licks instantly puts you into an ecstasy. Rih really drives this song forward with her seductive voice, as well. 9.5/10
4. Work - This song is a grower, and works within the context on the entire album. On it's own as a lead single, I wasn't a fan of it, but listening to it going through the whole album, it has really shown that it was a good single choice. 8/10
5. Desperado - This is one of the best songs of Rihanna's career. The way she delivers this song is her quintessential style that has propelled her into being one of the biggest stars on the planet. At the same time, she shows a very vulnerable side to herself on the song. It's a great dichotomy that is a constant theme throughout the album. 10/10
6. Woo - Wasn't a fan of this song, at first, but it definitely grew on me. Still on the lower half of the album for me, though. The beat is a very cool sound, and Rihanna delivers in her usual way. 6.5/10
7. Needed Me - This song is for all the female savages out there. Rihanna basically takes what misogynistic male R&B artists and rappers have been doing, and flips the script. Produces by DJ Mustard, so you know the beat is going to be dope, but it's a different sound for him, as well. Overall a fantastic song that is enjoyable throughout. 9.5/10
8. Yeah, I Said It - Another shorter song, but not quite short enough to be considered an interlude, I guess. The placement is perfect, and the song itself is great. 7/10
9. Same Ol' Mistakes - This copy-paste version of the Tame Impala is pretty cool. I would have never listened to the original version of the song, but it's a fantastic song. I just wish that Rih did something a little different with it. 7.5/10
10. Never Ending - This song is the definition of a filler. It's nothing really special, I don't imagine this being anyone's favorite song. It's just....there. 3/10
11. Love On The Brain - This song is an oddball on the album, but in the best way. It's such an unexpected sound from Rihanna, but she makes it work perfectly. It shows her ability as an artist to really make a cohesive album with a variety of sounds. A definite standout on the album. 8.5/10
12. Higher - Everyone who approved this song should be fired. I get what she's going for with this, but her vocals are grating on the ears. I pity everyone who is going to have to hear this song live. 0/10
13. Close To You - This is like the trilogy of California King Bed and Stay. Such a beautiful song to close the album, and a personal favorite of mine. Her voice is so simple on it, and the lyrics are filled with a subtle emotion that goes a long way. The ending outro is a perfect way to finish out the standard edition of the album. 8.5/10
This is Rihanna's most artistic effort by far. She even has co-writing credits on every song, which I found surprising. While the wait for ANTi was a tedious one, it was well worth it, as Rihanna delivered in a way that only she could. This album is a statement that Rihanna wanted to express, and it is one that solidifies why she is so successful today.
OVERALL: 69
*Note: I haven't done bonus tracks in past reviews, so I decided not to do them for this album, which is probably in Rihanna's favor.

If Sia were an actor, this album would win her a Razzie.
Furler attempts to adopt other identities with half-assed passion, failing to "act" successfully as any other artist and bafflingly stumbling in her own comfort zones. Once a deft lyricist, she completely indulges in the cliche in "Unstoppable," which simply can't muster any of the strength of its mother track, Kelly Clarkson's "Invincible" (a Sia-penned track).
Throughout "Acting" Furler ends up producing watered down versions of superior tracks from her previous album, 1000 Forms of Fear: "Footprints" borrows melodic content from Fear's "Burn The Pages," "Alive" tries to capitalize on her bombastic magnum opus "Chandelier," and "Bird Set Free" fails to capture the melancholy of "Big Girls Cry."
Perhaps the biggest problem with the album is Furler's insatiable blood lust for a hook, no matter how poor or unnecessary it may be. Every chorus at every turn boasts some form of a hook in a shameless bid for commercial success over artistic merit.
This Is Acting, unfortunately, highlights all of Sia's weaknesses: She's a Kelly Clarkson without the pipes, a Sara Bareilles without the lyricism, and a Björk without the everything.
If a majority, if not all of these songs were rejected by other artists, that should be a sign to Furler to let these songs die a blissful death in the world of forgotten demos, not be thrust into a limelight that's too bright for any of the songs to shine.
Overall: 2.4/10

This Is Acting Sia

1. Bird Set Free - Really strong opening track, imo. I love how her voice sounds on this, espically the chorus. 'I don't care if I sing off key' This sort of reminds me of 1000 Forms Of Fear, which I love. I think it's dope how the background vocals are in a different key to the lead vocal. 8.8
2. Alive - I will admit, I first heard this as a live performance on The Voice, and I was a bit underwhelmed by the studio. I love the verses, but the chorus to me... lacks something. She goes so hard when she performs it live, but I feel like the chorus is just meh. I can see why it was the lead single, but it just needs a bit more 'oomph' on the chorus. I'm still breathing, I'm still breathing Her vocals again sound great. 8.0
3. One Million Bullets - I hate the 'ooooohhooohhh' parts, but apart from that section of the song. The verses and chorus are actually spectecular. It took me a while to see past the 'oh' part, but damn. The song isn't completely intolerable. 6.7
4. Move Your Body - Wow, this is a song I never expected Sia to make. It's about as 'dancy' as Sia will ever get, and I will can't tell if it's awful or perfection. But I like it, and get Shakira vibes from it at parts. The chorus is def my favourite part of the song, and the beat is catchy. The last minute or so is actually incredible. 7.7
5. Unstoppable - One of my faves from the album! I'm so powerful, I don't need batteries to play I love how she plays around with her voice on parts of the song, espically with the chorus. I love the instruments on the last minute or so of the song, it really adds something to the song. 8.5
6. Cheap Thrills - This is actually awesome, I love the effects they used on her voice. I got all I need I can actually imagine Rih singing this track, I like the sort of dance/reggage(ish) vibes this song gives me, she hasn't really done anything like this song before. I really like the echo's/bg vocals a lot too. It just lacks something to me. Idk what it is. 7.5
7. Reaper - This is cute actually, she might go a bit OTT with the screaming in this one. But I like how she merges the BG vocals and lead vocals together with different keys, that really works for her. This is a bit more 'pop' than the other songs, and her voice really suits it. It's a little repatitive, and again it doesn't go anyway. But it's a good song.7.0
8. House On Fire - I just wanna do weird dances to this song. This again is extremely catchy, espically the chorus. I do keep thinking she's saying heart and not house in parts. The last minute of the song is the best, and once again the BG vocals really add a lot to this song.7.2
9. Footprints - I do think this is a filler, but it's weird because Sia's fillers are never bad songs. There just songs that are there but if they came on I would never be like 'this is horrible' or I would never skip them. This is actually again addicttive, but not one of the best from the album.6.9
10. Sweet Design - LOVEEEEE LOVEEE LOVEEE this track. The intro, her vocals, the beat, is SOOOO different to the entire album and do anything she's done before. From first listen this was in my trinity, it sort of reminds me of Brooke Candy. I can really imagine her singing this. This is def one of the best songs from this record, if not THE best. The instrumental itself is sooooo mesmorizing. 9.3
11. Broken Glass - The first ballad for a while on this record. This is actually pretty tame for a Sia ballad, and I dig it. She sounds very vunerable and isn't trying to scream (no shade at all bc I love Chandlier etc). This is actually another one of my faves from the album, I'm really addicted to this instrumental, as I am to most of the albums instrumentals. I also really like the outro to this song. 8.6
12. Space Between - This is again, a pretty tame ballad from Sia but it really works for her, imo. Her tone and vocals are incredible on this song. It's a great closer, to a pretty amazing album. It becomes a little boring towards the ending, but nonetheless it's still a pretty good closer. 7.4

Rihanna - Anti overall - 84
1. Consideration ft. SZA - Wow what a great album opener. SZA and Rih really compliment each-other on the song, they both flaunt their bravado over a thumping beat.. doesnt get any better then that 9.5/10
2. James Joint - Granted, this track is older so i have played it out a little but i still adore the song. Its very breezy and the outro slays me every time. 8/10
3. Kiss It Better - I KNEW from the moment i heard this snippet it would be the best song on the album. Everyone was raving about the Promised, and Higher snippets but boy did this song deliver. The guitar and her godly vocals together are a match made in heaven. Pure bliss 10/10
4. Work ft. Drake - From the reggae x R&B beat with AubRih its the perfect follow up to the island inspired Whats My Name? track they collaborated on in 2010. Undeniably catchy and my most played from the album. 9.5/10
5. Desperado - This is probably one of my least favorites on the album, kind of like Considerations inferior little sister. The chorus is definitely the highlight on the song though, which is a shame because the rest of the song doesnt follow in suit. Still listenable. 7/10
6. Woo - I find this track to be very polarizing. I do enjoy some parts of the song. I think the autotune on her voice really compliments the track although the grating beat really can get quite annoying in the song, i think the Intro of the song is a little too long of just instrumental. On the Plus side its a great song to listen to if your mad as ****. 6.5/10
7. Needed Me - DJ mustard X Rih really didnt disappoint. I kinda find this sound to be a little redundant (particullary on this record) But she goes HARD in this song. '**** you're white horse and you're carriage' Is probably one of my favourite lyrics on the album, and wooo lord that outro. 8.5 / 10
8. Yeah I Said It - The only downfall to this is its not a full song. Slap in a bridge and you have a perfect track. Rihanna always shines on her R&B music and this is the perfect example. 8.5/10
9. Same Ol Mistakes - Just as flawless as the original. Just another example Rihanna can tackle any different genre thrown at her. Everything about the song is so hyponitizing. 8.5/10
10. Never Ending - Probably the most underrated track on the album. The Melodies, the harp and her voice is a very beautiful combination. The only dislike i have with this song is its abrupt ending. Would of worked much better with a proper outro with the harp. 9/10
11. Love On The Brain - So many different Genres on the album yet they all seem to work, more or so better than her previous albums. This song is probably the most emotional and passionate on the album so you can see why it is one of Rihs favourites. This song is definitely a career highlight for me. 9.5/10
12. Higher - Another polarizing track. Sometimes i wish it was longer although i think its length compliments it as a follow up to LOTB. Also some of her best vocal work. 9/10
13. Close To You - Its almost impossible not to love a Rihanna ballad. Lyrically, its one of the best on the record and its a fantastic way to finish the album, the song really shows us how vulnerable Rihanna really is. In saying that i feel this is one of the more generic and weaker tracks, and is overshadowed by her other ballads. 8/10

Sia - This Is Acting
1. Bird Set Free - This is a beautiful opening to the album. The charged up chorus hits perfectly. It sets up the theme of the album well, which you would think is difficult due to the fact it's reject songs, but there's an overarching freedom expressed throughout the album. 8/10
2. Alive - The vocals on this song are incredible. Many don't like her voice and the way it breaks, but for me it conveys an emotion. She uses her voice very well to convey emotion in this song especially, and I would love to hear Adele's version of it. 8.5/10
3. One Million Bullets - I wasn't a fan of this song, at first, but it grew on me a little. It's sad that this is Sia's favorite song, because it's one of my least favorites. The verses are really interesting with her wavering voice, but the chorus sounds like a knockoff of her other songs, but not as good. 3/10
4. Move Your Body - This song is the bop I never knew I wanted! It's so cool to hear Sia deliver these types of songs, because they are unexpected, but she does them so well! 8/10
5. Unstoppable - This is kind of another copy of what we've heard from Sia on previous tracks. It's a nice song, but just drags on a bit, and doesn't provide enough interest to want to listen to it again. 4/10
6. Cheap Thrills - On repeat when I first heard this. The island sound is club ready. I can't wait to be intoxicated while out partying, and hear this song come on. I'll be getting my life on the dancefloor! 9.5/10
7. Reaper - This song is another grower, but it went 0 to 60 for me. It's follows the carefree theme of the album, and has a relaxed beat to that you can just nod your head to. 8/10
8. House on Fire - This became my instant favorite on the album. The general vibe of the song, the lyrics, production. It hits all the right notes for me. I love the subtle and dramatic opening into the drum line. The build to the chorus is perfect. 10/10
9. Footprints - The footprints metaphor is kind of cliche and boring. This song doesn't really offer much. It feels like it was just thrown onto the album as a filler, just like it was thrown out of the studio by whoever rejected this. 2/10
10. Sweet Design - This song cracks me up, because picturing Sia perform this and sing about her sweet ass just is a weird concept. This is a favorite for me. It has such a fun sound to it. The lyrics are fun to sing along with, and the production is something you can groove to in the club. 9/10
11. Broken Glass - Another filler on the album to me. The verses drag on, and the chorus doesn't offer anything of substance for me. The lyrics are nice, but that's Sia's strong suit. 3/10
12. Space Between - Such a pretty song, and a nice way to close the album. I instantly fell in love with the song on first listen. The simple production on the song allows Sia's vulnerable voice to really shine. The lyrics of the song are very beautiful, again Sia's strength. 9/10
While this may be an album of rejected songs, there are many gems that got away from other artists. Overall, I thought the concept for the album was genius: to take songs written for other artists, and put them on an album, and to title it 'This Is Acting.' Genius. While not as amazing as her previous effort, it certainly is not a failure.
