YOUTH and Hollow's sharp increases are probably at least in part due to their addition to Spotify's Pop Chillout playlist yesterday, which has almost 500,000 followers. I need to start paying more attention to what gets added/dropped from these playlists, as they definitely have impacts (Lush Life was added to a few as well right before its T50 debut).
A Few months ago I read something about 'Spotify playlists payola' on BMW

Yes, the article says the labels pay people to sit on Spotify and repeatedly stream songs so radio stations notice the increase and start playing the song more themselves. I don't think there's a component in the Hot 100 that's truly non-corruptible.
"Spotify playlist payola," to clarify, means a record label paying Spotify or a company that creates Spotify playlists to add a song to one of their popular playlists so that it will gain streams.

That makes more sense than what I tried to remember from a few months back. However, the gain out of Spotify Payola is also to increase radio airplay, because stations will see the song climbing the streaming charts and feel the need to jump on it.
I'm not sure about this payola thing with the labels. I actually don't believe it but I'm now skeptical. Most songs that get added on the big playlists like Today Top Hits (over 6M followers) or Rap Caviar (over 2M followers) are usually songs that are trending or selling well on iTunes. Per example Lush Life was added after crossing the 70M streams and after Never Forget You smashed in Europe.
However, I'm not sure about how they pick the new artists to break like what they did with Kygo in 2015.

And, here is a link to a version with drums. I don't know if it's "official" or not, but that would boost airplay at Active Rock (I like the version without these drums a lot better though). I tried to send the video clip using the instructions given by ATRL, but I wind up sharing a broken link. Let me see if I can even share the original.
Brief Friday morning update for The Sound Of Silence: Spotify is now at 7,199,513 (+767,516 since last Friday evening), YouTube main/official video 8,695,592 (+1,327,514 since last Friday evening).

There have been songs suspiciously getting huge streams with no promotion whatsoever. Cheerleader, Lean On, Firestone, and now Zara "men should be killed" Larsson... (I'm talking about when those songs were literally first released, Kygo, Omi, Felix Jaehn did NOT have millions of fans at the time...).
Most of the songs to benefit have been pretty good, but it makes no sense. I can kind of understand with Lean On because the three artists on the song were famous beforehand, but doing so well on Spotify immediately after release was suspicious to me. It must be because big playlists added those songs.

That's very interesting. Spotify's playlists have huge impact. Lorde's Royals became famous because of 'Hipster International' playlist:
(Of course I don't claim that Lorde used Spotify payola)
I'm pretty sure labels use Spotify's playlist to make new hits.

It's a still a monster but it slowed down significantly this past week.
I'm hoping for more big gains next week for both LY and SO. But LY is looking less likely on ODS
