I think the real issue is that black actors/ directors keep expecting approval and acceptance from white counterparts who are racist and do not care about them, it would be better if black people supported each other and did their own thing

whats still a little bit absurd to me is that people make it seem as if there are 50% white actors and actresses and 50% black actors and actresses in the world and it's pure injustice that we just have these noms and awards and numbers of films. I mean, if we are talking "white and black"-only and if the total sum of actors and actresses is like 85% vs 15%, of course the 85% will always have a higher chance of getting recognition etc..

People make it sound now like it's purely an unfair thing. Unless I see numbers (in the sense of real empirical numbers and statistics), I stick to the theory that real "racism" isn't as big of a problem as people make it out now (with regards to the "white vs black" actors and actresses debate; I agree with the "big" picture including Asians, hispanics, etc. tho that are also neglected).

(keep in mind that this is not to be interpreted as me being racist or so. I love Viola Davis and her acting for instance and also believe JLaw is overrated, etc.)

The comments in this thread are a bit unsettling. It's as if people are so adamant to take the blame off the Oscars. She didn't say the Oscars were not racist, because **** they certainly are. She said there are a "symptom to a bigger problem" meaning the Oscars are a big racist issue but the whole system needs to change. There is no way one can justify that in a whole calendar year with many people of colors having roles and giving good performances, not a single one was nominated. Not an Asian, not a latino, not a black person, nothing other than white people. It's absurd and yes, racist and a vibrant testament of white privilege. And people are trying to use this comment to absolve the Oscars of their faults.

I guess we should all stop now then. Star Wars and JJ introduced some minority roles so the job is done. Yay for equality.

Let's not worry about the rest of the industry, as well as music, the companies and voters that decide the winners at such ceremonies because one diverse blockbuster movie and multiple years of black-dominated slave movies are enough. I get it!

I'd like to see a movie where a black person isn't portrayed as a villain, or stereotyped because the colour of skin but given more deserving lead roles and not the endless excuses that they "should try harder" or they're "less deserving" or 'there's less black people so that's why there's less black people in movies', the latter being the stupidest, most ignorant excuse.

Everyone, from all races, that are perpetuating the race discussion are clearly talking **** and this is all imaginary. Silly us.

The so few black movies and winners of such awards, as well as the ratio graph of black to white population in the United States (even though the awards are given to everyone, not just Americans) justifies the 'supposed' (LOL!) lack of diversity.
