Well yes there was Slave trade like all most European powers of the time. Do you know where many of the slaves originally came from ? Estimates vary that between 10 million and 28 million Africans were sent to the Americas and sold into slavery between 1450 and the early 19th century.

There were no states as we know them in Africa back then (hell even in Europe they were fragile). You had ethnic tribes fighting out and the winning tribe would more often than not be able to take prisoners among the losing tribe and sell them as slaves for money.
